William Robert Nicholls was born in Ixworth on 30th December 1897 (Thingoe Q1-1898 4A:826), son of William and Ellen NICHOLLS (née LUMLEY).
1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Troston Road, Ixworth with his father William NICHOLS [28] horse man on farm; his mother Ellen [24]; brother Frederick [8 months]. All were born in Ixworth. 1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 27 Summerpit, Elveden with his parents, brothers Frederick and James [6] born Elveden; sisters Jessie [8] born Ixworth, Nellie [4] and Ivy [1] both born Elveden. |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
He died at No.46 Casualty Clearing Station, Proven. The Bury Free Press of 18th August 1917 reported:- ELVEDEN SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS We regretfully record the sad news that Private W.Nicholls, 16th Middlesex Regiment, has died of wounds received in battle. He was wounded in France on July18th and died on the 28th. Deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nicholls of Lower Farm, Elveden After being taken to hospital, one of hi sold chums, Prvt T.Trayes, R.A.M.C., of Elveden, dressed his wounds, which were in his head and right shoulder; after which Prvt Nicholls said he felt himself again. Later he got worse and subsequently died. He was buried at Merringham (sic) Cemetery. Before enlisting he was employed at the Elveden Gardens, under Mr.M.Flack, who gave him an excellent character....
